Latest Scam Comes From ICANN Approved China Registrar

The latest scam on the internet is coming direct to webmasters and site owners from an ICANN approved registrar located in China.

The scam is an attempt to get you worried about the very lax laws in China as they relate to Intellectual Property (IP) rights. Then after you become worried, to take action and register your domain name with them and all of the possible China extensions.

The cost to register all the domain extensions they want you to register is unknown, but it is safe to say it could be a tidy sum every year. Some of the domain extensions would not even be legal as you must reside there to register it. How the scam would handle that situation is unknown, but it could get a little expensive.

If you haven’t seen the emails, here are a couple from them.  The emails look innoucous enough and most domain owners / webmasters reply as they want to protect their property.

Two webmasters replied to their emails, the first received a reply asking to register the domain names and more. The second webmaster offered to sell his domain, but never received a reply.

The domain names have been redacted for privacy.

Dear Manager,

(If you are not the person who is in charge of this, please forward this to your CEO,Thanks)

This email is from China domain name registration center, which mainly deal with the domain name registration and dispute internationally in China.
We received an application from Huahong Ltd on July 9, 2014. They want to register ” YOUR DOMAIN” as their Internet Keyword and ” YOUR DOMAIN .cn “、” YOUR DOMAIN.com.cn ” 、” YOUR DOMAIN .net.cn “、” YOUR DOMAIN .org.cn ” domain names etc.., they are in China domain names. But after checking it, we find ” YOUR DOMAIN ” conflicts with your company. In order to deal with this matter better, so we send you email and confirm whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China or not?

Best Regards,

We are a Network Service Company which is the domain name registration center in Shanghai, China. On May 28, 2014, we received an application from Huahai Holdings Ltd requested “YOUR DOMAIN” as their internet keyword and China (CN) domain names. But after checking it, we find this name conflict with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it’s necessary to send email to you and confirm whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China?

Kind regards
